RE-VISITING & RE-WRITING with Boni Alvarez
January 22nd- February 26th; Mondays 11AM-2PM
A 6-week revision workshop with Boni B. Alvarez. We will workshop longer excerpts, examining the play as a whole – character arcs, act breaks, scene placement, and missing scenes. Writers should have 50 pages – full draft of a play they’d like to revise. Class is limited to 7 writers.
BONI B. ALVAREZ is a Los Angeles-based playwright-actor. His plays include FIXED, NICKY, BLOODLETTING, DALLAS NON-STOP, DUSTY DE LOS SANTOS, and RUBY, TRAGICALLY ROTUND. His plays have been produced/developed at Playwrights’ Arena, Echo Theater Company, Coeurage Theatre, Center Theatre Group, Chalk Rep, Skylight Theatre, Moving Arts, The Vagrancy, Los Angeles Theatre Center, EST/LA, The Blank, Second Generation (2g, NYC), InterAct Theatre (Philadelphia), and Oregon Shakespeare Festival. He has been a Semi-Finalist for the O’Neill National Playwrights Conference and Finalist for the PEN Center USA Literary Award and Clubbed Thumb’s Biennial Commission. He is a Resident Playwright of New Dramatists. He holds a BA from Sarah Lawrence College, an MFA (Acting) from A.R.T./MXAT Institute at Harvard University, and an MFA (Dramatic Writing) from USC.
First Draft with Charlotte Miller
starts February 7th for six weeks; Wednesday 7PM-10PM
A six-week writing workshop led by playwright Charlotte Miller, classes will focus on exercises to encourage each playwright to take ownership of their story-telling, aiming to finish a first draft by workshop’s end. While the immediate, driving goal will be to finish the draft, the overarching one will be to develop a personal process and discipline that will be useful beyond the workshop.
Charlotte Miller is a recent NY transplant, her plays include THIEVES (Rising Phoenix Rep/Rattlestick/Weathervane), BARN (Rising Phoenix Rep), UGLY LITTLE SISTER (NYU), WORST YEAR EVER (NY Fringe Fest). Her plays have been workshopped with Rattlestick, Labyrinth, IAMA, PLAYPENN, People’s Light, and Hudson Stages among others. She has previously participated in Echo’s “Nevertheless She Persisted” one-act festival and is currently mentoring one of their young playwrights and is a member of their playwright’s lab.
